Chief Security Minister congratulates parties involved in Leuser Ecosystem palm oil and mining moratorium
JAKARTA (foresthints.news) - The declaration of a moratorium on the expansion of palm oil and mining in the Leuser Ecosystem by the Minister of the Environment and Forestry, the Wali Nanggroe Aceh (Guardian of Aceh) and Governor of Aceh was met with congratulations and support from Indonesia's Chief Security Minister Luhut Pandjaitan.
The Chief Minister said that the move was a good step in following up on the directive of President Joko Widodo who called for a moratorium on palm oil and mining last week (Apr 14).
“Minister Luhut gave his congratulations to the Wali Nanggroe on the declaration of a moratorium on palm oil and mining in the Leuser Ecosystem in a meeting over lunch at his office last Thursday (Apr 21), two days after the moratorium was declared,” Vanda Mutia Dewi, the Executive Director of Greenomics Indonesia, told foresthints.news on Friday (Apr 22).
Vanda, who accompanied the Wali Nanggroe in the meeting, said the Chief Minister was of the view that the moratorium is an excellent development in response to the President's recent announcement.
“The Chief Minister also said that in the palm oil moratorium phase in the Leuser Ecosystem, intensive steps need to be taken to increase the productivity of existing palm oil plantations. This represents a possible solution to the issue of palm oil supply based on intensification and increased productivity,” said Vanda.
Vanda went on to describe how, in the meeting, the Wali Nanggroe expressed his deep gratitude for the support of the Chief Minister with respect to the declaration of the moratorium.
“The Wali Nanggroe told the Minister that he is 100% in support of the moratorium on palm oil and mining in the Leuser Ecosystem, as imposed by Minister Siti Nurbaya and Governor Zaini Abdullah,” she disclosed.
The Chief Security Minister, Vanda continued, responded enthusiastically to the words of support from the Wali Nanggroe, saying, “Yes, we all need to give our backing to this (the palm oil and mining moratorium) as it forms part of the President’s directive.”
She also related that the Wali Nanggroe conveyed his pleasure at President Joko Widodo’s announcement on the palm oil and mining moratorium to the Chief Security Minister.
“The Wali Nanggroe told the Minister that the President’s announcement had inspired him and the Governor of Aceh to take the step of declaring a moratorium on palm oil and mining in the Leuser Ecosystem,” Vanda added.
Vanda also said that the Chief Security Minister was happy and in agreement with the Environment and Forestry Minister, Siti Nurbaya, conveying news of the palm oil and mining moratorium in the Leuser Ecosystem in her remarks at UN Headquarters on 22 April 2016 at the signing ceremony of the Paris Agreement.
